Between 12th and 17th October, Michael Jemetz attended the international Frontiers in Education conference organized by ACM in Washington DC. There, educational researchers shared insights from the fields of educational innovations and engineering education.

Michael had the opportunity to present the paper “Teachers’ development of competence in managing generative AI technology: findings from a qualitative interview series”, which he worked on together with Renate Motschnig. The article focuses on how teachers develop competences needed for working with generative AI systems. Main findings – based on interviews with 19 teachers – are that they develop these competences in a similar manner to digital competences, namely through courses but also in an autonomous, self-regulated manner through materials, research and trial and error, that the self-regulated component of this process is particularly prominent in terms of AI-related competences at the moment and that many educators want more support.

In addition to being able to present the paper, Michael had the chance to attend interesting talks on various topics relating to innovation in computer science education and gather inspiration for his own research and teaching. Further, the conference offered many opportunities to connect with educational scientists from around the world and there was even some time for a trip through DC.
